Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Between Music Fans

Marking 20 years after Guitar Hero debuted in North America, giving players everywhere the means to become rock legends. Figuratively speaking, but try convincing anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by the developers, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes scrolling down the screen in time with a song. Each riff mimicked specific notes, producing the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio had already tried its hand in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they laid the foundations for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists included, showcasing classic bands to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, remembers the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases airtime increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they adored. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game brought older hits back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as music that was past it, however when it was included in the title young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated it, and got rid of the outdated label. It provided all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album was still not available in the US, so the game was a key medium for exposure for the group as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies were playing the song during travel, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around their music collections and associated lore, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group greater revenue than any of their records. It sold more than half a million units in its first week, while demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed fanaticism within the community. Recently, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics and extensive personalization features. The song is difficult even in expert mode, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed it took months of practice of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you should pick up a real gun and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

The band previously wrapped up a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that we were records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it risked eclipsing all other accomplishments. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – everyone’s got their own path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, be it for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles such as the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Games like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the scene alive, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher in development. A new studio has begun production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue for future fans.”
