Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
